RESEARCH ESSAY Explain the political structure of the late republic. After the overthrowing of their Etruscan rulers, the romans didn’t just change their political status but they established a new form of government, The Republic. A republic was a system of government which citizens were allowed to vote or choose the representatives, which governed on their behalf. With this change from the rule of a king, to the rule of a government and power investment in the magistrates and senate. The romans were able to establish a government which would carry on to late century B.C and which would be adopted by many. However the impact of the Punic wars and patron-client relationships changes some guidelines of the magistrates and the senate. The roman republic’s political structure was defined by the roman constitution, SPQR-senate and the people of Rome. There were three branches of government, the senate, the assemblies and the magistrates. â€Å"Her annually elected magistrates† (Livy), consisted of; 2 consuls who were the most important, their functions included being commander-in-chief of the army and to implement the senate’s decisions, the senate ‘’passed decrees to the magistrates with was usually obeyed’’ (Byrd), praetors were judges who administered Roman law and quaestors who managed financial matter.
